Bango's Pest Control - Pest Info: Camel Cricket

Size and Appearance:
Adults range from 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches in length.

Color varies by species, ranging from light tan to brown, often having dark brown bands on some segments.

Named for their hump-backed appearance when viewed from the side, camel crickets have long jumping hind legs and long antennae. They are wingless and are unable to chirp.

Commonly Found:
Usually found in cool, damp, dark habitats such as caves (why they are commonly called cave crickets).

Outdoors - may be found under stones, logs, porches and buildings or other cool, damp habitats with suitable amounts of organic matter (which they use for food).

Indoors - camel crickets will invade buildings in the fall seeking suitable places to pass the winter such as basements or crawl spaces, but seldom damage items in the home.

Diet:
Feed on almost anything-usually organic materials, cotton, linen, wool, silk and fur, plant decay, grass, fruits, seedling plants, fungi and even meat including other insects and on each other.

Important Facts:
Unlike most cricket species that we see, camel crickets do not "chirp".

Are sometimes called, “Spider Crickets” because of their long, spider-like legs.
